The weather has changed, and while I’m glad it’s wintery, my skin is not so happy. My face is in desperate need of moisture, but I also need to be careful not to go too heavy or I’ll break out. Lame, I know. Since loading up on a heavier night cream is out of the question, I’ve opted for a face oil instead. Most face oils are light enough to use year ’round but I’ve found my favorite one that not only gives me moisture but also balances my skin so that break outs are a thing of the past.
Beautycounter’s Lustro Face Oils smell and feel amazing. They even have 3 different formulas designed for different skin types, and are completely void of any harmful chemicals linked to human health issues. Score! I opted for number three, which aids in balancing out skin tone and helps with everything from acne, to rosacea and eczema. The second face oil is more of an anti-ager and for people with very dry skin. And their number one face oil is geared towards the super sensitive.
All three are thin enough to apply morning and night but you can reapply throughout the day for added moisture. I even use it as a makeup primer – leaving my skin supple and soft – the perfect canvas for foundation.
Most people want a light moisturizer in the summer, but for me, a skin salve does the trick when a lotion just doesn’t cut it. With beach days, the salty ocean dries out my skin, and moisturizing keeps my sun-kissed skin lasting longer. Also, salves are great for concentrated moisture in areas that need it more. Knees, cuticles, elbows and feet get drier quicker and rubbing in a skin salve is an instant soother. Plus for all those that suffer from eczema, a thicker, natural balm moisturizes without any of the added skin irritants that many commercially made products contain. These all-natural varieties are safe, effective, and smell amazing. I’ve rounded up my favorite ones from locally-sourced, small batch companies around the country. Now get salving!
KP Lotion Bar – This handy palm-sized tin holds a solid lotion bar that when warmed in your hands, melts into your skin. I love the way it moisturizes my skin and hair without leaving me greasy or sticky. They make a range of scents (including no scent), but my personal favorite is peppermint. The aromatic properties are soothing and healing.
One Love Organics Skin Savior – A true multi-tasker that can be used on the face and body. All of One Love’s products are manufactured in 1 of 10 ECOCERT® licensed manufacturing facilities in the country for natural and organic cosmetics.
Earth Tu Face Skin Stick – This handy little stick (that comes in a 100% compostable tube) offers moisture for the whole body and contains Geranium, which naturally prevents and fades scars.
PK Sonoma Luxurious Skin Moisturizer in Absolute Rose – I stumbled upon the PK Sonoma store on a recent trip up north. I fell in love with their all-natural sprays, oils and balms. Their website is limited but if you can’t get to Sonoma (a perfectly good reason for a trip to wine country, right?), pick up one of these wonderfully rose-scented balms that moisturizes and treats dry skin.
Meow Meow Tweet Repair Balm – Could their packaging be any cuter? Their vegan and plant-sourced ingredients deliver soft, crack free skin from head to toe. Also try their Relief Balm: a chest rub for congestion, muscle rub, as well as a bug bite soother.
Oh how I love a good body cream. I tend to run on the dry side, so those crocodile shins drink it up! But now that we’re entering summer and sweaty days are on the horizon, I like to switch up my luxurious thick creams and body oils, for something on the lighter side. I look for products that melt into the skin without leaving a thick residue but that also last the day – tall order! So I’ve rounded up a few creams that are lightweight but still luxurious.
